Ongoing and Upcoming Programs

The following will be our schedule for the next 3 months. It is a continuation of our work at the Kapoor ward, Pediatric oncology unit at Bangalore’s largest government hospital for cancer treatment, where we care for 52 children in one ward.

Monday Afternoons: Students from Mallya Aditi International School will continue their educational workshops under the supervision of Ms.Jhanvi Mohan

Tuesdays- morning regular classes and tutoring at the ward

Tuesdays- afternoons: Music and singing classes by Nalina and others

Thursdays- morning regular classes with tutoring at the ward

Thursdays- afternoons: Storytelling by Ambika and other creative activities. (This week we have a Drawing and Painting competition for our kids on 17th nov. by a Lioness club of Bangalore)

Saturdays- mornings regular classes with tutoring at the ward

Saturday afternoons- Yoga pranayama and other creative activity at the ward- This week will be Sculpture or Pottery classes by Yash.

story telling program-may 2011

From the month of May, we are glad to introduce a new program for our kids. Storytelling every Tuesday or Thursday afternoon at Samiksha. We now have a resource person who is a qualified storyteller and will lead the program for the kids at Samiksha. We are very happy to make this announcement. This is something we have been doing in a small way for our children, all these years. With the help of our new resource persons, we will be able to take this Storytelling program to new heights.

The party on International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day will be celebrated by us in a very special way. It won’t be about individual women and their achievements et all.. We, at Samiksha Foundation will be celebrating the contributions of a small group of highly focused and dedicated women The ANNS rotary women’s group- led by Nandita Sanghani , Asha Patil of Koramangala. They have been following the work done by us at Samiksha- Kapoor Ward, and are now sponsoring the biggest Birthday Party ever for our kids there. We have 18 children celebrating their birthdays this March ( Feb and March ) .. There will be entertainment and gifts distributed to ALL the 110 children. 52 in the ward and about 35 in the Dharamashala ( kids awaiting treatment) and rest in other critical care wards at the Hospital. We at Samiksha Foundation are grateful to this group of Women who have generously contributed to our cause and share our joy in person whenever they can. Thank You Ladies and Happy Women’s Day!

We would like to add that this was a hugely successful event with full participation of our volunteers and the ANNS group. Lots of laughter and lots of smiles were witnessed. The amazing thing was that the HOspital staff including nurses, interns, Social work department staff participated and had fun too. Fotos will be posted on our gallery asap. Thank You everyone!

Joy of Giving – 2010

As we approach this month of October 2010, everyone is talking and reading about the JOY OF GIVING. It is heartwarming to see the enthusiasm of many young people who are getting together to contribute to this idea in whatever way possible. The same may not be said about most of the corporates who are making much ado about their initiatives at this time. Being on the other side – that is, the receiving end, and running an organisation that cares for children with cancer, my views on this matter are a little more skeptical.

Corporates and any organisation that wants to support a cause or GIVE, must do so with an open mind and a long term perspective. A single day or week of entertainment for wanting children only lasts that much – a single day or a week. When the song and dance is over, all is forgotten and everyone is back to where they started. We would like to see projects being supported – rather than one day of fun and entertainment for our kids, where they may or may not even be able to participate . We would like to see sustainable achievement or growth for a cause that is initiated or encouraged by virtue of this “Joy of Giving ” week or month.

Let us put our heads and minds together to make a real difference!

Red Hat Party

On Thursday, August 26, we organised a party for six children in the ward whose birthdays were in August. This was a quiet affair, as many of the children were quite sick. However, the party did go off well, with plenty of singing and some games. I had my shiny red sequined hat on, which was much sought after by the children.

From now on, instead of conducting a party for all the children whose birthdays were during the month, we plan to give each of them a small gift on their actual birthdays. This will give them greater joy than having to wait for a party to be conducted at the end of the month, along with others.

Since it is the holiday season, there has been a lot of movement of visitors in and out of the wards. We have observed that many of these distribute bakery products, which has not gone down well with the doctors and the children’s diet. So, this time, we decided to bring about Fruit Awareness, and gave out moosambis to those in the ward instead.

We are also proud to say that one of our children, Ayesha, has been learning magic from the stage magician Nagendra, and will be on TV this week. She will also be performing for the other kids at Samiksha before she gets discharged this Saturday.

We are proud to share the testimonials of our little friends, staff and volunteers on our website and blog pages. These have been with us for a while, and we debated as to whether they should be shared on a public platform. Finally we have been able to take this decision without hurting the sentiments of our beneficiaries (in legal terms).

The children at Samiksha are happy to have written these notes to us and have given us permission to keep them with us and print them on to our website as part of our work. Soon these will be up on a link called ‘Testimonials’ under “Stories we have to tell”

May You Have A Happy Birthday!

On Saturday the 8th of May, we plan to have a birthday party for six of our children who have their birthdays in April and May. It will be from 2:30 pm onwards, immediately after the yoga and art class. Kathalaya will have a storytelling session with the children between 3 and 4 pm.

We request those who have recently expressed interest in the Foundation’s work to come and be a part of the celebration. We will also be distributing our next round of school kits on this day.

We would greatly appreciate sponsorships for this event as well as our other upcoming birthday celebrations.

Information on volunteering at the Foundation has been elaborated. It can be found on a new page, titled What You Can Do.
Details for sponsors, including bank information and specific one-time and monthly program requirements have been listed out on the Be A Sponsor page.
Our three Areas of Action have been moved into our vision statement.
